Instant Classic: The Making of a New Standard: Gotye ft, Kimbra "Somebody I used to know"

Okay, random holiday break is over and time to get down to business.....
If you are shopping for a music lover for Christmas or you just want to treat yourself to something great and new I have some suggestions-two of which were recently featured in live form on KCRW.
There have been (as always) a ton of great releases this year and I want to point out three of them . In lieu of doing an official 'top-whatever' list for the year, over the next three posts  I am going to point out three artists that put out some works this year that are going to have some serious legs in the years to come...and when  I mean legs, I mean lasting influence that will be heard and/or reheard and done and redone for decades.
My three standouts that have popped-up this year are as follows:
Blitzen Trapper, Little Dragon, and Gotye.

I am going to start with the one that is already the biggest hit and will be the one you will keep hearing over and over in different versions for a very  long time to come: Gotye ft. Kimbra "Somebody That I used to Know"
...with almost 18 million views Youtube, this song is no sleeper. It is already a worldwide smash and for good reason. This song is not just an instant classic, it is a new standard-as in the old-school meaning of 'standard' for a pop-song.
Vivid, quirky, and honest lyrics combined with equally unusual arrangement make this song stand out far beyond most hit songs.
To put it bluntly, this song is the shit.
This is a song that you can redo now at the height of it's popularity, 6 months from now when people would normally be getting sick of it, 18 months from now when most songs have begun to be lost from immediate memory or 10 or 20 years from now. In the hands of a decent arranger, this song will always sound fresh. I can hear everything from a Billie Holiday-style arrangement to a modern R&B version with the lyrics spoken and not sung.
It just works.
Don't take my word for it, sit back and just listen and then mull over what I have said. I have already heard three different version just with Gotye and Kimbra and they all have been unique.
This song is amazing. Take it all in. If you have heard it before, put on a new set of ears and listen again, if you have never heard it before, sit back and enjoy.
